Stone terraces and paved spaces built to last

We design and oversee the construction of outdoor terraces, courtyards, and patios — selecting materials that complement the architecture and withstand the demands of the Algarvian climate.

Terraces & Paving — DOGMAS & FUNDAMENTOS

Paving that connects indoor and outdoor living

A well-constructed terrace transforms how a property is used. It creates a defined outdoor living space — for dining, relaxing, or entertaining — and establishes a physical and visual link between the interior of a home and its garden. Our approach treats terraces as architectural elements in their own right, not simply flat surfaces.

We work with natural stone, ceramic, concrete, and gravel — selecting materials based on the aesthetic of the property, the intended use of the space, and the practical demands of sun, rain, and foot traffic. Drainage planning is integrated from the outset to ensure surfaces remain functional through all seasons.

A complete terrace design and build service

Each terrace and paving project covers the following phases, scaled to suit your project.

Design & Layout

Scaled drawings showing the terrace footprint, levels, step positions, and material zones in relation to the property and garden.

Material Specification

Selection of appropriate stone, tile, or gravel with samples, providing guidance on appearance, durability, and maintenance requirements.

Drainage Planning

Surface gradient design and drainage channel specification to direct water away from the building and prevent pooling after rain.

Ground Preparation

Excavation, compaction, and sub-base preparation to ensure the long-term stability and evenness of the finished surface.

Construction Oversight

Management of the build process — coordinating materials delivery, overseeing workmanship, and inspecting progress at key stages.

Finishing & Sealing

Appropriate joint filling, edge detailing, and surface sealing treatments to protect the material and enhance its appearance.

From first sketch to finished terrace

A structured process that keeps the project on track and produces consistent results.

01

Site Assessment

We visit the site to take measurements, assess drainage, existing levels, and any structural considerations before any design work begins.

02

Concept Design

Scaled layout drawings showing the proposed terrace position, shape, levels, and step configuration — presented for review and discussion.

03

Material Selection

We present material options with physical samples and pricing. Once approved, all materials are specified and quantities confirmed for ordering.

04

Ground Preparation

The area is excavated, levelled, and compacted. Sub-base layers are installed to the correct depth and specification before any surface materials are laid.

05

Surface Installation

Paving, stone, or gravel is laid to the agreed pattern and level. Joints are filled and edges finished according to the design specification.

06

Final Inspection

We carry out a detailed walk-through on completion — checking levels, drainage function, jointing, and overall finish before handover.

Common questions about terraces and paving

We work with a wide range of materials including local limestone, sandstone, slate, porcelain tile, granite setts, exposed aggregate concrete, and compacted gravel. Material choice depends on the look you want, the intended use of the space, and your budget — we guide you through the options with samples and pricing.

A typical residential terrace takes 1 to 3 weeks to complete, depending on size and complexity. Design and material ordering precede construction, so the overall timeline from initial consultation to finished terrace is usually 4 to 8 weeks.

Drainage is a core part of the design — not an afterthought. We design surface gradients to channel water away from the building and towards suitable outlets. Channel drains, soakaways, or connection to existing drainage can all be incorporated depending on the site conditions.

Yes. We regularly design terraces that incorporate existing trees, built structures, level changes, and planted areas. Early site assessment helps identify constraints and opportunities so the design works with the existing landscape rather than against it.

Yes. Steps, low retaining walls, and changes in level are commonly integrated into terrace projects. These elements are designed as part of the overall composition and specified to complement the paving materials used on the main terrace surface.
