Purposeful gardens that grow with time

From site survey to final planting, we design cohesive garden layouts using species suited to the Algarve climate — balancing beauty, resilience, and low maintenance.

Garden Design & Planting — DOGMAS & FUNDAMENTOS

What garden design means in practice

A well-designed garden begins with understanding the site — its orientation, soil type, drainage, and existing vegetation. We build the design around these conditions rather than imposing an idea on them. Every planting scheme we produce is a response to the specific place and the people who will use it.

We work with a wide palette of Mediterranean, drought-tolerant, and native Algarvian species — selected for their appearance through the seasons, their suitability to the local climate, and their long-term ease of maintenance. The result is a garden that looks considered from the first season and continues to improve with age.

Everything your garden project needs

Every garden design engagement covers the following — adapted to the scale and complexity of your project.

Site Survey

Detailed measurement and assessment of your outdoor space, including aspect, existing features, and soil conditions.

Concept Layout

A scaled 2D plan showing zones, planting areas, paths, and any hard landscaping elements to give your garden structure.

Planting Schedule

A complete species list with quantities, positions, and seasonal notes — including drought-tolerant and native varieties.

Soil Preparation

Recommendations and on-site work to improve drainage, amend soil texture, and prepare planting beds for new plants.

Plant Procurement

Sourcing of all specified plants from trusted local and regional nurseries, ensuring quality and appropriate sizes.

Seasonal Scheduling

Planting timed around the optimal seasons for establishment — coordinating flowering periods and growth cycles.

Our garden design process

A transparent process from first conversation to finished planting.

01

Initial Consultation

We visit the site, listen to your ideas and priorities, and assess the existing conditions. This shapes everything that follows.

02

Soil & Site Analysis

We assess soil type, drainage behaviour, sun exposure, and wind patterns — the factors that determine which plants will thrive.

03

Concept Design

We produce a scaled layout showing the garden structure, planting zones, and any proposed hard landscaping elements for your review.

04

Planting Plan & Species List

A detailed document specifying every plant by name, position, quantity, and care requirements — ready for procurement and installation.

05

Procurement & Installation

We source plants and oversee or carry out installation — preparing the soil, positioning plants correctly, and ensuring healthy establishment.

06

Aftercare Guide

A written guide covering watering schedules, pruning times, fertilising, and seasonal tasks to keep your garden in excellent condition.

Common questions about garden design

Timeline depends on the size and complexity of the project. A typical residential garden design — from first consultation to completed planting plan — takes 3 to 6 weeks. Installation adds additional time depending on the scope of works and plant availability.

We work primarily with Mediterranean and drought-tolerant species well suited to the Algarve climate — including native Portuguese flora, ornamental grasses, aromatic plants, succulents, and seasonal bulbs. We can accommodate specific requests and design for year-round interest.

Yes. We can source all specified plants from trusted local nurseries and carry out or oversee installation. Procurement is available as part of the full design service or as a standalone addition to a design-only engagement.

Absolutely. Many of our projects involve reworking or extending existing gardens — retaining healthy established plants, redesigning problem areas, and introducing new planting to improve the overall design. We always assess what is worth keeping before suggesting removals.

Low maintenance is often a primary brief. We achieve it through careful species selection — choosing plants that are naturally suited to the local conditions and do not require excessive watering, pruning, or feeding. Good soil preparation and mulching at the outset also reduce ongoing care significantly.
